Sports Medicine Careers

About Sports Medicine Careers
There are many careers in the field of sports medicine. Typically, these careers involve working with active individuals, like athletes, who are either trying to prevent injuries, treat injuries, or improve their athletic performance. The goal of most sports medicine career professionals is to help these individuals to achieve top performance while maintaining optimal health.

Training/Education
Many colleges and universities have degree programs in such fields as exercise and sports science, and other sports medicine fields. These programs focus on the study of physiology and the movement of the human body, especially as it relates to sports and exercise. Classes include general biology, chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, and exercise physiology.

Career Options
With a degree in exercise and sports science, or other sports medicine related fields, you will be prepared to embark on a number of sports medicine careers. These sports medicine careers include becoming a personal trainer where you will work one-on-one with an individual or group, planning and supervising exercise programs; an athletic trainer where you will work with athletes in schools or professional teams to treat and prevent sports injuries; a sports medicine physician, which is a sports medicine career that will require additional training and involves the diagnosis and treatment of sports-related injuries; a physical therapist, which also involves additional training and involves helping people rehabilitate from injuries or diseases of the muscles, joints, nerves, or bones; or a dietician that helps athletes and other individuals determine the best diet for their level and type of activity.
