A health educator has an opportunity to make a big difference in his or her community. A career in health education focuses on preventative medicine and helping children and adults learn about good nutrition, ways to stay healthy and prevent disease, and how to live well with chronic diseases such as diabetes.
The broad title of health education covers a myriad of careers. Among these are a careers as health teachers for elementary school, middle school, high school and university students; community health educators who help teach the public about health-related issues and healthy living; nutritionists; dietitians; and social workers for a hospital, clinic or other medical facilities.
The degree necessary for a career in health education varies with individual jobs. A health educator in a public school or university needs to have a bachelors or masters degree in health education plus a teaching certification. Nutritionists and dietitians need coursework in food-related and nutrition topics as well as a health education degree, and social workers generally need a masters degree in health education or a related field.
