What are Careers in Sonography?
Sonography is the use of non-radioactive imaging devices for diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The move toward more and more procedures that don't require the use of radioactivity is becoming increasingly popular. Health concerns over the effects of radioactive materials as well as the exceptional quality of images acquired through the use of sound waves and magnetic resonance. Today, ultrasounds are such a popular method of diagnosis that most people have had at least one. Cardiologists use a form of ultrasound to diagnose heart disease and malformations of the heart.

What Education is needed for a Career in Sonography?
There are many ways to get into a career in sonography. Some hospitals and imaging centers do their own training. To begin with one of these institutions, all you would require is high school mathematics and sciences. Experience in other medical fields would be an asset. Increasingly, employers are choosing from those with training or degrees from technical schools, colleges, and universities.

Where would I Work if I Choose a Career in Sonography?
More than half of all sonographers work in hospitals and other health facilities. However, with the increase of imaging centers, independent labs, and medical officers that employ their own technicians, this is shifting. Today some of those with careers in sonography even work in large vans, which go to remote locations to provide diagnostic services to people who would not otherwise receive it.

What is a Career in Sonography Like?
The work environment for most sonographers is in hospital or other medical facilities. As such, it is very clean, well lit and climate controlled. Exposure to infectious microbes is heightened in these sorts of positions as the exposure to medical patients increases.
