Medical Technician Careers

Do you long for a career in the medical field yet do not wish to spend numerous years in school and go into major debt to become a physician or a nurse? A popular alternative is to become a medical technician because it requires much less money, time, and schooling but is equally rewarding for many professionals. There are many types of medical technician positions that allow you to serve as an important member of a medical treatment team in a wide variety of health care settings.

An x-ray technician is one of the career possibilities available. It is the job of an x-ray technician to take clear images of the insides of patients' bodies to assist radiologists and other physicians in accurately diagnosing medical conditions. Different types of images x-ray technicians may take include traditional x-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, and mammographies. X-ray technicians can work in doctor's offices, hospitals, or specialized imaging centers.

Another type of medical technician is a surgical technician. A surgical technician's job is to assist surgeons in the operating room. Typical duties include sterilizing medical equipment, preparing operating tables, and handing the surgeon tools as they are needed.

Dental hygienists also fall under the category of medical technologists. A dental hygienist performs routine teeth cleanings and assists the dentist in performing a full range of dental procedures.

Regardless of specialty, medical technician training typically involves completing a vocational training program at a technical college. Some medical technologists hold certificates, while others hold associate's degrees in their fields. Each program serves to teach you how to operate the various medical tools and pieces of machinery that you will need to use as a medical technician. Since medical technology is always changing and advancing, the education of a medical technician does not end after completing a formal program. Rather, you will have to continue updating your education for the rest of your career to be able to provide the best services for your patients and the physicians with whom you work.

Quality health care is not possible without dedicated medical technicians. You can begin making a difference when you commit to a rewarding career as a medical technician.
