  • Community: Being a pharmacist in a community setting offers you the opportunity to interact directly with patients dispensing medications. You may own a business or work for retail chain companies. Of all PharmD careers, this path is perhaps the most visible as you interact directly with people in the community.
  • Hospital: In the hospital setting, you assist in patient care in collaboration with doctors and nurses. You may also choose to become specialized in one area, such as surgery, cardiology, or neurology.
  • Pharmaceutical Industry: Pharmaceutical companies need sales and marketing staff that are knowledgeable about a drug's mechanism-of-action, interactions, and general dosing.
  • Managed Care: In this career, you develop strategies for drug therapy in a manner where the patient receives safe and effective drug therapy using cost-effective strategies.

Training for PharmD Careers

How do you get a PharmD? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a PharmD degree requires the completion of two years of pre-requisites in college plus 4 years of pharmacy school, for a total of 6 years. In addition to courses in science, mathematics, and drug therapy, you learn about public health and ethics. Many PharmD graduates pursue additional training through a residency or fellowship.
