Medical Insurance Careers

Medical insurance is one of the most profitable industries in the United States, especially with the enactment of the Affordable Care Act, which requires all citizens to possess some form of medical insurance. Health care is one of life's necessities, so it is safe to say that the medical insurance industry is not going anywhere anytime soon. A career in medical insurance offers you the job satisfaction and security of working within a sector that is guaranteed to be relevant for many years to come.

One of the most popular medical insurance careers is that of an insurance sales agent. An insurance sales agent communicates directly with patients shopping for health insurance plans. The agent is responsible for helping each client determine the best plan for his or her circumstances. The agent must possess the necessary knowledge to take all aspects of a client's life situation into consideration, including finances, family, career, and medical conditions. One specialized type of medical insurance sales agent is an eligibility representative, who helps people and businesses maximize their insurance benefits through informing them of what they are eligible to receive.

To become an insurance sales agent, you should first obtain a college education. Degrees in economics and business are preferable, although other majors are fine as long as you make sure to enroll in courses such as accounting, marketing, finance, and business law, which serve to equip you with the knowledge necessary to be an effective agent. Afterward, you must become licensed as an insurance agent. It is also helpful to enroll in a certification program that verifies your specific expertise in medical insurance.

Another option is to work as a medical underwriter. Underwriters are responsible for performing in-depth analyses of applicants to help insurance companies assess their risk of approving each applicant. Underwriters need a college degree and should ideally have taken relevant coursework in areas including law, business, and medical terminology. However, much of an underwriter's training occurs on the job rather than in a formal educational setting.

The medical insurance industry provides endless career opportunities for job seekers. If you desire a career that allows you to make a noticeable difference in people's lives, medical insurance might be right for you.
