Career as a Paramedic

Are you in good physical health? Do you want a job that keeps you on the go? Do you want to help people when they need help the most? If so, you may want to consider a career as a paramedic.

A paramedic is an emergency medical technician (EMT) that has reached a very high level of training. Paramedics are the first responders in a medical emergency. They are usually contacted by a 911 emergency service dispatcher who has learned of a medical emergency within a certain locale. Paramedics generally drive in ambulances to the scene of the emergency, such as a car accident that has injured someone, or to the house of someone who had a heart attack, etc.

Paramedics have to go through a rigid training program. Depending on the regulations from state to state, future paramedics must pass four different levels of EMT training. Finishing the fourth level usual requires at least two years of study. Many paramedics who have gone through this training system ultimately receive associate degrees in applied science. Besides coursework, paramedics-in-training must also log a number of hours in the field, learning the trade beside an experienced paramedic.

Most full time paramedics are located in cities, where constant emergency systems need to be in place for large populations. A career as a paramedic can provide a steady paycheck. Paramedic benefits also tend to be quite generous, given the stresses of the job.
