Careers in Psychology

Do you tend to be the shoulder that your friends cry on? Are you interested in how the human mind deals with stress and trauma? Would you like a job that helps people get their lives back on track? If so, you may want to look into a career in psychology.

Psychologists provide relief to patients through counseling sessions. They help patients deal with psychological problems by talking about those problems. Most of the time, through careful discussions, patients find the source of their anxiety and begin to deal with it in a productive way.

Psychologists work at hospitals, clinics, schools, and in private practices. Becoming a psychologist means walking down a long educational road. Psychologists are generally required to hold a PhD before being allowed to practice. Earning a PhD takes a long time, often seven years or more. As a psychology student advances through a program, he or she is required to spend more time in therapy sessions under the guidance of mentors. By the time a student earns a PhD, he or she will generally have enough practical experience to begin practicing alone.

If you want to eventually have a career in psychology, but are currently holding down another career, you may want to consider taking some of your required psychology classes online. To fully earn a PhD, you'll probably have to spend some time in a classroom or clinic, but there are many online psychology programs that enable students to get certain requirements out of the way quickly and for less money than at traditional campus universities.
