Psychologists are generally required to hold a PhD before being allowed to practice. Earning a PhD takes a long time, often seven years or more. As a psychology student advances through a program, he or she is required to spend more time in therapy sessions under the guidance of mentors. By the time a student earns a PhD, he or she will generally have enough practical experience to begin practicing alone.
